Prices Trimmed Down for Xbox 360 20GB
Microsoft has announced to cut the price of its best selling Xbox 360 model, which ships with a 20 GB hard disk, to USD 299 until supplies last. Reduced price is part of its strategy to make way for the new Xbox 360 model that ships along with a 60GB hard drive, which will remain at the price point of USD 349.
The company stated the reasoning behind it is to build on storing the growing wealth of digital entertainment available for the console, including music, movies, television shows, and game content. The new model will be tempting US gamers from August, with a UK release date yet to be announced. The move comes just before E3 kicks off in LA this week.
Microsoft is locked in a three-way competition with Nintendo's Wii and the PlayStation 3, which comes with a high-definition Blu-ray video player. A cut to USD 299 makes the Xbox 360 Pro USD 100 less than Sony Corp's PlayStation 3 with a 40 GB hard drive.
Sony used a similar strategy to phase out its 60 GB PS3 model, the USD 599 price was dropped by USD 100 to USD 499 to clear the inventory and make room for the 80 GB models, which initially sold for USD 599 and is priced at USD 499 today.
