400GB Blu-ray Disc is Not a Dream Anymore, Says Pioneer
Pioneer, a Japanese electronics maker, recently revealed that it has developed a read-only optical disc with a capacity of 400 GB, far more than any disc commercially available today. The company claims that it has a single disc that contains 16 layers of storage, at 25GB each. That adds up to 400GB of data capable of being stored on a single disc.
Developed using proprietary optical disc production technology, Pioneer has overcome transmission loss of signals from each recording layer by using a disc structure that reduces crosstalk between adjacent layers. This promises high-quality signal playback from every layer resulting in greater stability during playback.
The company also developed a compensator and a light-receiving element for reading signals when there's a high signal-to-noise ratio in the optical pick-up mechanism, according to Pioneer. "This development has bolstered Pioneer's confidence in the feasibility of a large-capacity optical disc, which is expected to become necessary in the near future," the company said.
Pioneer's product, which it hopes to launch by the year-end shopping season, will be developed with Sharp Corp and make it the seventh Japanese manufacturer to enter the market for the high-definition DVD recorders.
