Getty Would Soon Offer Right to License Images from Flickr
Getty Images, creator and distributor of visual content and other digital media, and Flickr, a division of Yahoo and one of the largest photo sharing communities, recently announced to get into collaboration under which Getty Images will exclusively offer its customers the right to license images from Flickr.
The Yahoo-owned photo-hosting community will be a new resource for Getty, which can now contact Flickr members directly through the site and ask them if they want to share one or more of their images for use in a special Flickr-branded Getty collection.
Getty editors will invite photographers to participate in the program and ensure that their images have the proper releases to be licensed legally. Those who are included in the program will get paid at the same rates that Getty pays photographers who are under contract with the company.
In order to get paid and allow their images to be used, Flickr members must sign a Getty Images contributor contract, which stipulates that the photographer is the owner, and has any necessary model releases and originals. It also outlines the various rates based on size and intended commercial usage. Getty licenses range from USD 49 to thousands of dollars.
"Through this partnership, we will be offering an expanded choice of imagery with more regionally relevant content and a wider range in the style of photography available," said Andy Saunders, Vice President of Creative Imagery at Getty Images.
Detailed terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The companies said that financially the deal would be immaterial for both Yahoo and Getty Images. Over time, however, thousands of Flickr photographers may benefit, claimed Yahoo.
