Facebook Drags German Website to Court
Facebook filed court papers past week against German social network StudiVZ for copyright infringement. Facebook claims that the German company has copied its look, feel, features and services. "As with any counterfeit product, StudiVZ's uncontrolled quality standards for service, features and privacy negatively impact the genuine article," Facebook stated in the complaint.
StudiVZ issued a press statement that the website has not received any formal complaint from Facebook and it cannot comment yet in detail. It said the American social networking site is suing because it has failed to gain popularity in Germany. The German site has also filed for a declaratory judgment in a court in Stuttgart, Germany to demerit Facebook's claims. "Their strategy appears to be: 'If you can't beat them, sue them,'" said Marcus Riecke, chief executive of studiVZ
Earlier this year, Facebook settled a copyright infringement lodged by ConnectU, a social network that employed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and accused him of stealing its ideas.
